Chennai: Eric Simons, the bowling coach for Chennai Super Kings, has come to the defense of Matheesha Pathirana, who has been struggling this IPL season. He noted that opposing batsmen have become more adept at reading his bowling style.
The five-time IPL champions faced elimination from playoff contention after suffering their eighth loss in ten matches against Punjab Kings on Wednesday.
Pathirana, recognized for his unique bowling action, has seen a decline in his performance compared to the previous season.
CSK's head coach previously mentioned that a modification in Pathirana's bowling action contributed to his current struggles.
Simons stated in a post-match press conference, "There has been some discussion about a change in his action. However, he is nearly back to his previous form, particularly regarding the height of his arm during deliveries."
"I don't believe his accuracy has diminished. Instead, batters are adapting to him more effectively. We can observe a noticeable trend in how they are approaching his bowling, especially in the recent match against Mumbai," he added.
This season, Pathirana has claimed nine wickets with an average of 33.11 and an economy rate of 10.39 over eight matches, but he has also been prone to bowling wides.
Simons emphasized that Pathirana must adapt as batsmen have discovered ways to score off him.
"The next step for him may involve tactical evolution to stay ahead. Just as batsmen must adapt, bowlers must also evolve," he remarked.
"His bowling channels and lines were solid tonight. While he prefers a fuller length, batsmen are treating him differently this season."
Simons believes that CSK needs to enhance their tactical approach during critical moments to secure victories.
"As a team, we need to pinpoint areas for improvement in both batting and bowling. Overall, the players have performed their roles well. It's crucial to win those pivotal overs. Sometimes, a tight over can change the course of the game," he explained.
"There are instances where we might escape a challenging over, but we need to understand how to navigate through it. Being tactically smarter in key moments is an area we must continually develop."
